Tarot Decks and Tarot Cards with Printed Keywords

Many Tarot Decks and Tarot Cards with printed keywords have shown up in various tarot marketplaces these days. Often, these Tarot Cards have multiple keywords printed on them. Some of them even have the keywords for when the card is reversed! I have also noticed that such Tarot Decks with multiple keywords are becoming popular with Tarot Students. Today, I want to caution Tarot Students and Beginner Readers about the dangers of using such decks to learn and practice Tarot Readings. Let’s talk about why I feel this way.

When you start studying the Tarot, you will find many decks that will catch your eye. Some of these decks might have keywords printed on the cards. Typically, Thoth-based Tarot Card Decks always had keywords printed on the card image. However, the decks I am worried about aren’t those decks.

Essentially, we have two types of Tarot Decks with printed keywords: those with a single keyword and those with multiple keywords.

Tarot Cards with Printed Keywords: Thoth-Based Tarot Decks

10 of Disks - Wealth - Thoth Tarot Card with Printed KeywordThe idea of Tarot Cards with printed keywords is not a new one. It can be traced back to decks like the Thoth tarot, where cards have a single keyword printed on the image.

Thoth-based decks have keywords printed on the bottom of the card image. Other Thoth-based decks like the Tarot of the Spirit and the Rosetta Tarot also have keywords printed on them. All these keywords are usually in keeping with the card’s interpretation system and often indicate the big energy at play within the card image.

Tarot Cards with Printed Keywords: Non-Thoth Tarot Decks

3 of Cups - Osho Zen Tarot Card with Printed KeywordMany decks, such as the Next World Tarot and the Osho Zen Tarot, also include keywords on their cards. These keywords differ from traditional Thoth Tarot keywords and often follow the themes set by their individual Deck Creators. Some of these keywords summarize the card’s meaning and interpretation.

I find the presence of this single keyword distracting, and I have trained myself not to look at the keyword when I use that deck. This has not been an easy process!

Challenges for Visual Tarot Readers: Using Tarot Cards with Single Printed Keywords

Keywords printed on the Cards may be helpful guides for beginners or aid in memorization of card information. Having several keywords printed on the card image does create challenges, especially for visual readers. In some decks with multiple keywords, I’ve noticed that the card image size has been reduced to make space for these keywords! These are the decks that I have a genuine problem with.

While reading with the single-keyword decks, I often get distracted by the Keyword on the card face. As a visual Tarot Reader, I rely on the image to inspire and connect me to the intuitive insights that come through. So when I read with single-keyword decks, my eyes automatically get drawn to the keyword printed on the image. This distracts from what my intuition is trying to tell me. The keyword starts echoing in my head, and the other intuitive information gets drowned out in that noise.

If this is what happens with a single keyword printed on the bottom of the Tarot Card image, you can only imagine how chaotic it gets with multiple keywords printed on the card!

Borderless Thoth Tarot CardsIn the past, the only way I’ve been able to work with the decks with a single keyword or keyphrase on the card image is by training myself not to look at that part of the card until I’ve heard what my intuition has to say. This is not an easy habit to build, especially because I look at the card image at a glance during the reading.

Recently, I became a bit brave and got the card edges cut off, effectively removing the keywords in the process. I have done this with all my Thoth decks. What a positive change this has done for my readings!

I can always recall the printed keywords if I need to. However, they are now grouped with the other keywords for that particular card. Thus, they don’t interfere with my visual intuitive-creative Reading process.

The Pitfalls of Multiple Keywords Printed on Tarot Cards

World Card - Tarot Cards with Printed Keywords as a Learning ToolThe emergence of Tarot decks with Tarot Cards with multiple keywords printed on them has created some very pressing concerns.

One positive use of these decks could be assisting with memorizing the card keywords. You could use these cards like you would use Flash Cards to memorize useful data/information about the card.

Any more than that, and students run the risk that these cards become crutches that impede their intuitive reading process. Relying too heavily on keywords may hinder the intuitive process of interpreting the cards based on imagery and personal intuition.

This over-reliance on keywords can limit creativity and restrict the reader’s ability to intuitively connect with the deeper meanings of the cards.

Tarot Cards with Printed Keywords - Multiple Keywords Crowding out the Card ImageFocusing solely on the printed keywords could also lead the readers to overlook the rich symbolism and imagery of the cards, missing out on the profound insights these imagery components can offer. This could prevent the Tarot student from adding to their knowledge of the card’s esoteric meanings.

I’ve also observed a few students who used these decks with multiple keywords printed on them. Over time, they start relying on those keywords for interpretations — and rarely look at the card image to guide and inspire their interpretations. What’s worse is that when they work with a regular deck, they find themselves stuck and unable to make sense of the card!

In my opinion, learning with such decks can hinder the process of intuitive interpretation. I would caution Tarot Beginners about using such Tarot Card Decks while learning.

Embracing Intuition and Imagery

The essence of a good Tarot Reading lies in connecting with the card imagery and interpreting it in the context of the question. The card imagery components guide a Tarot Reader to an intuitive interpretation. These images inspire creative interpretations that infuse the Reading story with an engaging narrative that helps contextualize the Reading for the querent.

Intuition InsightsIt is the card images that inspire intuition, imagination, and interpretation.

Readers can unlock the true potential of the Tarot Cards by immersing themselves in the visual cues of the cards and by tapping into their intuition. Readings can feel like magic when you embrace the visual symbolism of the cards and allow the free flow of intuition and creativity.

When a Tarot student learns how to read the Cards by looking at the card image and using their common-sense interpretations, they also learn how to connect with their intuition. This process happens quite unknowingly, very subtly.

However, when you start reading keywords printed on the cards, you engage your intellect in the interpretation process. You completely sideline the intuitive and creative processes.

Learning to read the Tarot with these multiple-keyword cards can hamper your intuitive and creative journey! To me, that is quite a serious matter. After all, isn’t the Tarot one of the most amazing ways of connecting with your intuition and creativity?

Honestly, if the keywords were all that mattered, why do the Tarot cards even have pictures on them? Should we print cards with keywords on them and no images? Will they also inspire intuition and creativity like the Tarot Card images do?

Keywords emerge from our interpretations of the card’s image. Those images are interpreted subjectively. While basic card meanings may remain what they are, the interpretations of the card imagery change from reading to reading, context to context. This applies to the Tarot de Marseilles cards as well — those pictures also have a lot going on which helps the intuitive interpretation process.

Keywords are a great way to memorize the card’s meaning and get unstuck while Reading. However, their presence on the card image can be an awful distraction that creates hurdles in the Reading process. Keywords do have their place as learning tools. However, they should not overshadow the importance of the image-based intuitive insights that spark creative interpretations while doing Tarot Readings. Tarot Readers and Tarot Students should cultivate a connection with the card imagery to spark their intuitive insights and interpretations.

Tarot Decks and Tarot Cards with Printed Keywords

Ultimately, the Tarot is about letting the pictures speak to you and trusting your intuitive abilities to guide you.

I would sincerely like to tell Tarot Students: Please don’t start your Tarot learning journey by learning to depend on these printed keywords. Instead, learn how to interpret the card image, and awaken your intuitive and creative potential. The Tarot card images are a vast storehouse of wisdom. Working with the card images will guide you to discover many gems of insight hidden within these colorful pictures.

When you learn the simple, easy, and most natural way to create keywords based on card images — you won’t need to memorize long lists of card meanings, ever!

Crafting Keywords for Your Tarot Cards

Crafting Keywords for Your Tarot Cards

Crafting Keywords for Your Tarot Cards

Crafting Keywords for Your Tarot Cards

Do you struggle to recall the meanings of the Tarot cards while doing a Tarot Reading? Even if you memorized the meanings from a book, you may not remember them at the right moment. This very likely happens when you don’t connect with those meanings. This is quite a common challenge for many students learning the art of Tarot reading. However, there is a simple and effective method to overcome this hurdle. Crafting Keywords for your Tarot Cards is a simple, powerful, and super personal approach to becoming a better Tarot Student & a Tarot Reader. In my experience, this method isn’t simply a shortcut to mastering card meanings. This method enables you to do creative and intuitive readings.

Why Should You Craft Your Keywords for Your Tarot Cards?

Tarot Card KeywordsCrafting keywords for your Tarot Cards using familiar language styles, words, and phrases helps you easily remember and recall the keywords. This can be helpful for beginners, who may find it daunting to remember the meanings for all the 78 cards of a standard Tarot deck.

Crafting your keywords personalizes the card meanings for you. To create your keywords, you often draw from personal experiences. You may even connect the cards with things, situations, or people that mean something to you. These personal impressions are easy to remember and recall. They make your readings have a lot of impact and depth. This can help you take your readings beyond the typical book meanings.

Crafting your keywords is also a very effective way of consolidating the card’s various meanings into words or phrases. This helps you easily recall the core energy and essence of the card. This deeper personalization can help you dive deeper into the card’s symbolism. You can add layers of meanings derived from the Tarot’s many associations.

Crafting your keywords also has an unintended, but very interesting side-effect: You end up with a handy, personalized glossary of Tarot card meanings at your fingertips.

Essentially, crafting your keywords helps to significantly improve your learning curve, making the process personal and enjoyable. This accelerates your learning process and makes recalling card meanings almost second nature.

How to Craft Keywords for Your Tarot Cards

Tarot CardsThis is not a very complex process. However, to get the most from this process, it will help you if you remain free, open, playful, and creative. Be childlike in your approach to the process. The more relaxed and fun you make the process, the more value you will gain from this exercise.

1: Picture. Image. Scene.

Remember, it always comes back to the card image. Everything emerges from there. Hold the card in your hand and look at the card image. Notice every small detail in the imagery. Look away for a moment, and now look at the entire card image in a glance.

2: Observe. Feel. Experience.

What do you see? What do you feel when you look at what’s going on in the picture? What is the person in the card doing or experiencing? What stands out to you? What feelings does the card image evoke within you? What life experiences does this image remind you of? Does it remind you of a scene from a movie, a book, or a story you’ve heard?

3: Words. Phrases. Summaries.

Can you sum those things up in a word or a phrase? It is absolutely ok to have multiple words and phrases that describe some part or the whole of the card image. Use language that feels natural to you. You do not have to write a detailed description or create complex narratives of the card image. Just capture the essence of the card’s story in a word or a phrase.

Examples

Let’s look at a couple of examples as I work through them using the steps I’ve mentioned above.

10 of Wands10 of Wands:

  1. I see a man holding 10 Wands, his back is bent with the weight of those wands, his head buried in the wands. There’s a house in the distance.
  2. Right away, I notice that his back is bent down with the weight of the wands. Could his back be hurting?
  3. Walking with his head in those wands, he can barely see where he’s going. He needs to put some of them down and ease his burden. He will then be able to see where he’s going.
  4. Here are my keywords: Burdened, Taking on Burdens, Too Involved in Responsibilities, Back Pain

The HermitThe Hermit:

  1. I see an old man, with a long white beard, standing on a snow-covered peak. His eyes are closed: his thoughts have turned inward.
  2. The old man is wearing a gray cloak. The card’s background color is also very gray-ish. It is a neutral, non-descript, and therefore not very threatening color in an in-between time.
  3. The old man is holding up a lantern — there is a shining six-pointed star inside the lantern. He is ready to share his hard-earned wisdom.
  4. The old man also has a golden stick in his other hand. His deep wisdom is based upon his extensive life experience.
  5. So here are my keywords: Wise Old Man, Contemplation, Isolation, Guide, Inner Wisdom

Yes, the process is really that simple! And here are some ways you can add more pizzaz, and more value to the keyword creating process.

Crafting Keywords for your Tarot CardsSome Tips for Crafting Keywords for Your Tarot Cards

  1. Keep it Simple: It makes the keywords easy to remember.
  2. Use Your Voice / Style: Personalizing the keywords using familiar words and speaking styles makes it easy to recall since they resonate better with you.
  3. Go Deeper: As you study more and dive deeper, you can create keywords using card details such as colors, numbers, and symbols.
  4. Let Yourself Evolve: Over time, your keywords will change and evolve to adapt to your changing perspectives and vocabulary.
  5. Start with the Minor Arcana: These are usually simpler images (especially compared to the Major Arcana images) and can be a great way to learn and improve your keyword crafting skills.
  6. Use With Traditional Meanings: Your keywords will enhance and complement traditional meanings and not replace them — so feel free to add traditional meanings to your keyword list if you resonate with them.
  7. Different Meanings: If your keywords are different from the typical, traditional card meanings, be sure to include them in your list! You are good as long as you can explain why this meaning makes sense.

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings

Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings

A Tarot card can have many meanings. The sheer number of those meanings often makes learning Tarot a very daunting prospect. Let me show you a simple and effective way to derive the Tarot Card meanings so that you can learn how to read the Tarot Cards.

Students who want to learn to read the Tarot Cards, often find the seemingly endless lists of card meanings overwhelming, so much so that many of them end up quitting on Tarot.

However, there is a very simple way to derive the meaning of the Tarot Card all by yourself. This means you need not be daunted by the long list of Tarot Card meanings.

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings

The very straightforward method of figuring out the meanings of these lovely images is to just look at the images on the cards and describe what you see in them.

Yes, you read that correctly! It is that simple!

1: Tarot Card Images are Scenes from Life

Along with esoteric symbols, the Tarot Card images show people in scenes from everyday life. All you have to do is simply describe those scenes using everyday language.

Tarot Readings are based on the fact that these scenes of people doing various things and going through these different situations are a symbolic representation of what the querent is going through in their lives. So when you describe the scene within a Tarot card image, it will resonate with a situation that your querent is facing in their life.

2: Symbols are Metaphors

The symbols in these descriptions are metaphors and can be applied to the topic or question that you have asked the cards. The people in the card images and the actions implied by the card images, suggest how your querent will likely act in those situations.

3: Images have Multiple Interpretations

Images are unique. And since interpretations can be subjective or contextual, these images can be interpreted in multiple ways. In this way, each image can tell many stories.

This is the reason why there are so many meanings for each Tarot Card. Mastering this simple way to derive the Tarot card meanings will then give you the ability to figure those out by yourself. You won’t have to memorize endless lists of meanings anymore. In fact, you’ll likely be adding more interpretations to those lists!

Simple Way to Derive Tarot Card Images: Example

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings - eLearnTarotIf you look at the image on the 3 of Swords, it isn’t difficult to see what’s going on. The card image shows three swords piercing a heart. The metaphor here is quite clear.

The symbol of the Heart is all about love and feelings, and Swords can be very painful when they pierce anything.

This card image talks about pain, heartbreak, and betrayal. Therefore, it isn’t hard to figure out what is going on when someone draws this card in a reading.

In an actual Reading, you won’t just be looking at the Cards. You’ll be drawing them to answer the questions posed by your client/querent. This means you’ll be looking at the cards within the context of those questions.

4: Adjust for Context

Depending on the context or topic of the question the client has asked, the meaning of the card will alter slightly to match that context.

The meaning of the 3 of Swords in a relationship reading is pretty obvious. This card tells us that there’s a heartbreaking betrayal, a painful realization that lies in wait for the querent.

In a different context, the meaning will adjust accordingly, while the core of the meaning remains the same.

So if the question is about work-related situations, then the possible interpretations of the 3 of Swords could be a betrayal at work, a heartbreaking situation at work, or a painful betrayal within a workplace relationship.

Simple Way to Derive Tarot Card Images: Some More Examples

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings - eLearnTarotThe 2 of Wands is a lovely example. In this card, we see a well-dressed young man standing on the roof of his house, looking at the ocean. In his hand, he holds a globe. Below, we see his village.

From the way he is dressed, we can see that this man is doing well for himself. The globe in his hand and his looking at the ocean could very well suggest that he wants to travel the world. He wants to leave his little village and see more of the world.

In a question related to work, this could talk about wanting to explore more job options that go beyond what the querent is doing at the moment. It shows the desire to expand one’s career horizons, even the willingness to travel away from one’s hometown.

In a question related to relationships, this card may show a very different story altogether. This may show a desire to explore other options, outside of the current relationship.

This card may show a combined meaning too! We could see how a career change inspired by the desire to expand one’s horizons could also include (or bring with it) the desire to walk away from the current relationship.

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings - eLearnTarotAnother lovely example is the 6 of Swords. This card shows a man rowing a boat. Seated in the boat are a woman and a child, and six swords. In the distance, we see the other shore.

Within the context of a relationship reading, this card image could suggest moving from one place to the other along with the family. It could talk about “finding other shores to settle down”. The swords could represent issues and burdens that this move could be bringing up. Or the swords could be the issues and burdens that they are carrying with them to the other shore.

In a Reading about work and career-related topics, this card could suggest that a group of people are moving from one team to the other, or one department to the other, while carrying their issues and burdens along with them. It could suggest situations where one person could be steering a team or a group of people towards a more stable environment.

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings - eLearnTarotThe 10 of Cups is yet another great example. This card features a happy family, complete with 10 cups in a rainbow. The image suggests joy, happiness, and harmony.

If you draw this card in a relationship reading, it could mean that you will find true love and a happy relationship. It shows a happy family, where everyone is loved and nourished.

If you draw this card in a career reading, it could mean that you will experience emotional satisfaction in your work, that your workplace environment feels like being part of a family, or you work in a family-owned company.

Once you get started, it is easy to get creative!

5: Add Layers

Once you’ve become familiar with the previous steps, you can add one more layer to the Tarot Card meanings. Call it the icing on top of the cake, if you will.

Along with the people and the symbols on the card images, notice the colors, symbols, and numbers. These also add value to the meaning of the Tarot cards.

The Simplest Way to Derive Tarot Card Meanings - eLearnTarotFor example, the Ace of Cups card features a cup overflowing with water, suggesting abundance and fulfillment. The number one on the card represents new beginnings, while the color blue represents emotions and intuition.

All of these elements come together in the card’s image, and we can say that the card could mean abundant emotions, fulfilling new beginnings, overflowing emotions & intuition, and so on.

In a work Reading, this could be interpreted as emotional satisfaction at work, or feeling very fulfilled with one’s job. In a relationship Reading, this card shows emotional fulfillment within a relationship, or even by oneself (the number 1 is a solo traveler after all).

Simple Way to Derive Tarot Card Images: Homework

Take a look at all the cards that we’ve looked at earlier. What layers could you add to the card meanings by adding in the interpretations for the colors and numbers? Do they enhance the basic meaning of the card?

Try applying those enriched meanings to the two different contexts that we are using as examples: relationship Readings, and work & career-related Readings. Do these meanings bring out more aspects of the interpretation? How do these new interpretations bring out other aspects of the client’s questions?

Take Your Tarot Card Meanings To the Next Level

You can apply this simple and effective technique to every Tarot card image, and derive the Tarot card’s meanings by looking at the image and describing what you see. Then by applying that concept to the context of the reading, you can gain a deeper understanding of the situation you are reading for.
